So, how does sound healing work? It’s called entrainment… say what?
In ancient Eastern spiritual traditions, it is believed that the human body consists of seven energy centres, each vibrating at a specific frequency, perceived by our ears as different pitches. When these frequencies deviate from their natural state, for example during times of stress, it causes cellular changes, disrupting the body's fluid energy flow. This disruption can lead to mental wellbeing issues, physical ailments, and even disease. Sound healing uses musical and vocal vibrations to influence and rectify the body's vibrations through what is known as energy entrainment.
The Huygens entrainment phenomenon: In 1665 a Dutch physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and inventor Christiaan Huygens noticed that two pendulum clocks, mounted side by side on a wall, would eventually swing together in precisely synchronized rhythm. Huygens came up with the assumption that there must be some sort of connection between the activity of the two pendulums, that small energy transfers between them allowed them to synchronise. The effect was subsequently confirmed by many other experiments and was called entrainment. Entrainment is the natural process of a rhythmic pattern, which stimulates other systems to fall into the same rhythm.
Sound healing operates on the principle of entrainment. For example, when we hear music, we tap our feet to the rhythm. In sound healing, it is used to entrain brainwaves to a slower rhythm, to help bring about a state of deep relaxation. My fellow sound healer Rosemary gives a great analogy: “Think of the body like a symphony orchestra with all parts (muscles, bones, organs, cells, etc.) having their own frequencies which, when healthy, are all in perfect rhythm and harmony. When the body systems become compromised due to physical or emotional causes, certain frequencies are affected and literally become out of tune. Just as in an orchestra, when one instrument is out of tune, nothing sounds right! Everything is affected. With sound therapy, utilizing various instruments and tones, the body is gently brought back to its natural state of harmony.”
Altering the vibration and energetic state of a person through sound healing offers a multitude of benefits including:
- Reducing stress and anxiety by removing blockages and restoring balance.
- Boosting energy and vitality as energy flows more freely.
- Promoting physical healing by reducing inflammation, boosting the immune system, and relaxing tissues, especially helpful for individuals with chronic pain or physical ailments.
- Enhancing mental clarity and focus: By promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and increasing energy, sound healing can help to improve mental clarity and focus. This can be especially helpful for individuals who struggle with attention or concentration issues.
- Supporting emotional healing: Sound evokes feeling and sound healing can bring emotions to the surface to be processed.
I hope this little introduction to sound healing and the science behind it has shown you that it is an incredibly powerful tool, one I hope you will all embrace at some point. I hope to see you one day at a workshop, event or 1-1 where I can use sound healing to help bring your energy centres and brainwaves back to their natural, healthy states, to help you find inner peace and balance.
Sending you much love, light, and happiness.
